 Just Cause 3 Introduction

Just Cause, a 2006 third-person action-adventure game, unfolds within an expansive open-world setting. Developed by Avalanche Studios, a Swedish game developer, and published by Eidos Interactive, it serves as the inaugural installment in the Just Cause series. The game made its debut on platforms such as Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. Its in-game world spans an impressive 1,024 km2 (395 sq mi), encompassing 21 primary story missions and over 300 supplementary side missions.

By April 23, 2009, Just Cause had sold over one million copies. A sequel, titled Just Cause 2, was subsequently released in March 2010, developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Eidos Interactive, with distribution handled by Square Enix. Just Cause 3 was unveiled in November 2014 and hit the market in December 2015. Just Cause 4 was launched for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in December 2018. Furthermore, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda confirmed the development of a fifth installment, although its release date remained uncertain.

Gameplay:

The narrative of Just Cause commences in 2006, focusing on the adventures of Rico Rodriguez, an operative affiliated with a secretive entity known only as the "Agency." Rico is airdropped onto the Caribbean island nation of San Esperito, with a mission to rendezvous with his mentor and Agency superior, Tom Sheldon. Their objective: to overthrow San Esperito's dictator, President Salvador Mendoza, who the Agency suspects possesses weapons of mass destruction. Rico teams up with Sheldon and fellow agent Maria Kane, aligning themselves with a guerrilla group and the Rioja drug cartel, both intent on rebelling against Mendoza's oppressive regime and the Montano drug cartel, which has thrived under the regime's corruption. The game primarily chronicles Rico's efforts to destabilize Mendoza's rule, eliminate the Black Hand mercenaries employed to oppress the populace, and confront the cartels. Rico can also aid in liberating various regions to further erode the government's control over the island.

As the plot unfolds, Sheldon uncovers evidence confirming Mendoza's control of WMDs. With San Esperito lost to his rule, Mendoza retreats to his private island. Sheldon, Kane, and Rico fly to the island to prevent Mendoza from deploying the weapons. Rico boards Mendoza's jet and eliminates him and his remaining guards, ultimately ending his reign and enabling the Agency to secure the WMDs.

The core gameplay of Just Cause combines elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game within a sprawling, open-world environment. On foot, players can engage in activities such as walking, swimming, jumping, combat, and the use of weapons. Additionally, players can take the reins of various vehicles, including cars, boats, aircraft, helicopters, and motorcycles. The game introduces exhilarating stunts, such as standing on the roof of a moving vehicle and leaping to another, or deploying a parachute while riding atop a moving car or boat. Key features also encompass skydiving, base jumping, and parasailing.

The non-linear, open environment empowers players to explore and tailor their gameplay experience. While storyline missions are necessary for advancing the game's plot, players are free to complete them at their own pace. In between, players can freely roam, although doing so may attract unwanted attention and potential threats from authorities. Optional side missions, such as liberating villages or seizing control of drug cartel hideouts, become vital for accumulating favor with specific factions.

The critical reception of Just Cause varies across platforms. The PC version garnered "generally favorable" reviews, whereas the console versions received "mixed or average" ratings, as per the review aggregation site Metacritic. IGN noted a lack of depth in gameplay for the console version, citing repetitive side quests. The game suffered from bug-related issues, with some reviewers suggesting it may have been rushed to market without adequate time for debugging. The PlayStation 2 version, in particular, faced game-breaking bugs rendering certain missions unplayable until a reset. Notably, Eidos did not release patches for the PC or Xbox 360 versions.

Final Words:

Despite these concerns, The Times awarded the game a perfect five-star rating, lauding its parachute mechanics and the sense of freedom it offered. Edge gave the Xbox 360 version a positive seven out of ten, highlighting its enthusiasm and unique sense of freedom. Conversely, 411Mania rated the same console version 6.5 out of 10, calling it enjoyable but not an essential purchase. The Sydney Morning Herald gave the game three out of five stars, noting issues with vehicle handling and mission design but praising its action-packed, mindless fun.

In the UK, the Xbox 360 version of Just Cause maintained the top spot on the sales chart for three consecutive weeks.
